Great Expectations
50 x 70 cm, 2022 - ongoing

Great Expectations explores how ideas of islands shape the landscapes we create, visit and preserve. What happens when our expectations begin to reshape the landscapes we long for?
Beginning with Tropical Islands near Berlin, where the idea of a island is reconstructed indoors, the series expands across tourist landscapes on different islands. Rather than contrasting the artificial with the natural, the photographs examine how both are continuously shaped by tourism and by human expectations of what a landscape should be.
The island is approached not only as a geographical place, but as a cultural image that has been imagined, reproduced and transformed over centuries. The series asks how ideas of nature are formed and how tourism becomes one of the forces through which these ideas are translated back into the landscape, shaping environments that reflect human expectations as much as geological processes.
